Last updated 2026-05-24
Most professional Canon, Nikon, and Sony bodies with built-in networking support FTP upload to ZenTransfer.
Network connectivity¶
Cameras need Wi-Fi or Ethernet access. Common field setups:
- Smartphone mobile hotspot
- Dedicated portable 5G/Wi-Fi router
- Venue Wi-Fi (less reliable for breaking news)
Canon¶
The R-series lineup including R1, R3, R5 (Mark II and C variant), R6 (Mark II), and R. The 1DX series (Mark I through III) is also supported.
Canon publishes FTP setup in camera manuals. Example: Canon R5 network FTP guide.
Sony¶
Recent Alpha cameras including Alpha 1, Alpha 9 series (through III), Alpha 7R series (III through V), Alpha 7 series (III and IV), and Alpha 7C series (II and CR variants).
Nikon¶
Professional Z series: Z9, Z8, Z7 (I and II), Zf, Z6 (I and II). Selected DSLRs including D5, D6, D7200, D750, D780, D810, and D850.
FTP behaviour notes¶
- The FTP server is write-only — you cannot list or download files from the upload endpoint.
- Successfully processed files are removed from the temporary upload storage.
- Status sidecar files may appear during upload (
.processed~filenameor.error~filename).
Security note¶
Standard FTP is unencrypted. ZenTransfer uses temporary upload-only credentials and removes files from the upload server after processing. For encrypted upload, use FTPS or SFTP where your camera or client supports it.
